Description: Perennial clump grass to 3’+ with short curled leaves along the stems and seeds with 3 thin tails (awns). Moderately attractive.
Natural Habitat: Pinelands, seasonally wet open woods and meadows.
Planting and Care: Nothing special, does best in full sunlight, and can be suppressed by more aggressive grasses. Although occurs in wetter conditions, it is drought tolerant after establishment.
Pros: A handsome medium-sized grass that adds texture to a mixed grass/wildflower planting. Host plant for Meske’s skipper.
Cons: Relatively short-lived perennial.
