Description:  Perennial with striking erect or leaning 3-4 ft spikes of light purple blooms in autumn.

Natural Habitat:  Pine rocklands in Miami-Dade; pine flatwoods, dry prairies and fields throughout Florida.

Planting and Care:   Water daily for 2-3 weeks.  Tolerant of dry soil after establishment. Flowers best with abundant sun.  Dies back yearly, resprouting from underground corm. Will self-seed to form a small meadow if ground is kept clear.

Pros:  Beautiful autumn flower spikes. Supports butterflies and many other pollinators. Tolerates plants in close proximity, and spikes stay erect if some supporting grasses or herbs are nearby. Tolerant of drought and poor soil.

Cons:  Tall flower spikes may sprawl if unsupported.
