Description: A  rhizomatous grass with stiff wiry blades 1-2 ft high,  forming rather open patches that can intersperse among other native plants. Flower spikes to ~ 3" with large seeds eaten by birds.

Natural Habitat:  Moist prairies, pinelands, and sand dunes.

Planting and Care:   Prefers moist soil, and can tolerate periodic flooding, but also but also OK on drier ground once established.

Pros:  Blades are long lived, and can provide support for adjacent tall flower spikes like Blazing Star and  SIlver Aster. Seeds eaten by birds. A good plant for restorations, native meadows, and wetter sites. Once established it requires little care.

Cons:  Like all rhizomatous grasses, it will spread.
