Miami Bluestem (Anatherum miamense, formerly a ssp of Andropogon ternarius)

Description: A tall perennial clump grass, 4-5+ ft, with alternating reddish and tan stem segments. Endemic to the rock pinelands of southern Miami-Dade and the Keys.  Showy especially when in flower and seed.

Care: Little required after establishment; drought tolerant.

Pros: Being a “clump” grass, it does not spread by rhizomes or runners. A good grass for mixed gardens and restorations.  Tolerates poor quality and rocky soil.

Cons:  Not much, requires sun for best appearance.
