Description: Long-lived shrub to 3-4 feet, of slow-moderate growth, often as wide as tall, with thin leaves, dark above and coppery below, and clusters of small flowers, either male or female on a given plant.
Natural Habitat: Pine rocklands of Miami-Dade and the Lower Keys, less common up the east coast.
Planting and Care: Flowers best in full sun, but does fairly well in partial shade. Avoid muddy or constantly wet soil. Drought tolerant after establishment.
Pros: An attractive shrub. Numerous butterflies and other pollinators are drawn to the flowers. The larval host plant for Bartram's scrub-hairstreak (Strymon acis) and Florida leafwing (Anaea troglodyta floridalis) butterflies, both of which are declining and now limited to the Everglades National Park in South Florida.
Cons: Not much.
Please specify male or female plants if desired.
