Pineland Snowberry (Chiococca pinetorum)
Pineland Snowberry (Chiococca pinetorum)
Description: long lived slow growing perennial, to 1' tall (usually shorter), with shiny small dark green leaves on thin woody branches that spread horizontally in full sun, and root periodically. Has handsome clusters of white bell-shaped flowers and shiny white fruit. Can be used as groundcover, but also tolerates growing among taller flowers and grasses, where branches tend to arch upwards.
Natural Habitat: Rock pinelands and edges of hammocks.
Planting and Care: Grows and flowers best in sunny areas. Requires little care and tolerates poor soil. Once established, it is drought-tolerant.
Pros: Attractive flower and fruit clusters, visited by butterflies. Requires no care after establishment, will spread slowly to form groundcover but not overpower other plants.
Cons: Not much apart from relatively slow growth.
