Description: Perennial with 3+ ft spikes of purple or lavender flowers in mid-late autumn. Similar to Liatris chapmanii but flowers have obvious stalks, making the spikes appear more "open", and blooms later in the year.
Natural Habitat: Pine rocklands, flatwoods, and sandy fields flatwoods with dry to moderately moist soil.
Planting and Care: Water daily for 2-3 weeks. Tolerates dry soil after establishment. Flowers best with abundant sun. Dies back yearly, and resprouts from underground corm. May self-seed if ground is kept clear.
Pros: Beautiful autumn flower spikes. Supports butterflies and many other pollinators. Tolerates plants in close proximity, and spikes stay erect if some supporting plants are nearby. Tolerant of drought and poor soil.
Cons: Tall flower spikes may sprawl if unsupported.
