Description:   A perennial clump grass, 2-3+ ft, and 5+ ft when flowering. Stems often with alternating reddish segments, Seed heads often “split”, hence the name.

Natural Habitat:  Pineland, prairie and scrub.

Planting and Care:  Grows in moist to dry, poor quality soil. Needs abundant sunlight for best growth and seed production.

Pros:  Host plant for 4 species of skippers. Showy especially when in flower and seed.  Being a “clump” grass, it does not spread by rhizomes or runners. A good grass for mixed gardens and restorations.  Tolerates poor quality and rocky soil.

Cons:  Not much, requires sunny areas for best appearance.
