Starrush Whitetop (Rhynchospora colorata)

Description:  Perennial sedge growing by rhizomes,  6-24" tall with attractive green-tipped white bracts.

Natural Habitat:  Seasonally wet prairies and moist pinelands.

Planting and Care:  Should be kept moist; will survive dry spells but does best in moist soil.  Flowers best in full sunlight. Tolerates poor-quality soil.  

Pros:  Moderately slow spreading with widely separated rhizomatous growth; won't overpower even small flowers.  An excellent plant for around a water feature; will also tolerate standing water, and brackish conditions.

Cons:   Needs moist soil to do well; daily or alternate-day sprinklers usually adequate.
