Tall threeawn (Aristida patula)
Tall threeawn (Aristida patula)
Description: A handsome perennial clump grass with long thin arching leaf blades and even longer wispy flower spikes. Wider than tall.
Natural Habitat: Endemic to South Florida, and overall rare, despite occurring in rock pinelands, prairies and mesic pine flatwoods at multiple sites in 8 counties.
Planting and Care: Does best in full sunlight, where it can spread to 5'+, counting the flower spikes. Dies out in deep shade and protracted drought. Does best in mesic/moist conditions. Adds texture to a mixed flower/grass garden.
Pros: A wide clump grass with attractive flower spikes and moderate growth rate. Large enough to provide cover for small vertebrates.
Cons: Self-seeds and can spread gradually; may slowly crowd out small flowers and forbs.
